Joel J. Shugarman (1943 – 2025)
It is with heavy hearts that we remember our founding partner, mentor, and dear friend, Joel J. Shugarman. Joel didn’t just practice law, he built a legacy. With an unwavering commitment to honesty, hard work, and results, That foundation, rock solid and unmistakably “Joel,” is etched into the DNA of this firm.
A Marylander through and through with a deep love for his family, Orioles baseball, and budget-friendly office supplies, Joel approached life with passion, humor, and no shortage of knowledge and insight. Simply put, Joel knew a lot about a lot. He was a mentor who believed in grit over gloss and substance over style. Joel was an aggressive advocate for his clients, committed to providing sound opinions and legal guidance with confidence and without compromise. He considered his staff and colleagues a family and always treated them as such. An advocate for the legal profession in Maryland, Joel set an honorable example for up-and-coming lawyers, well stated by a lawyer who reflected on his passing, “Back in 1981, which was around when I joined MTLA (MAJ’s predecessor organization), Joel served as President. He was a friendly, gregarious, and highly competent Plaintiff’s attorney, who continually got excellent results for his clients, and I am sure that his civil demeanor enhanced his success at litigation. He was not only well respected in the Plaintiff’s bar, but the defense lawyers regarded him as tough, honest, and competent.”
We miss Joel deeply, but we are endlessly grateful for the years we shared, the lessons he taught, and the example he set.
